British Shorthair Weight Management and Obesity Prevention
The British Shorthair is a naturally large, "cobby" breed with a slow metabolism and a famously laid-back temperament. At Grand Liberty Cattery, a FIFe and WCF registered breeder since 2005, we consider healthy weight one of the single most important factors in a British Shorthair's longevity. Because the breed gains weight easily and rarely complains, owners often miss the early signs of obesity until it begins to affect the cat's joints, heart, and quality of life.Healthy Weight Ranges
A mature British Shorthair is a slow-maturing breed that reaches full size between three and five years of age. Adult females typically weigh 3.5–5.5 kg, while the larger males usually fall between 5.5–8 kg. These are guidelines, not targets: bone structure varies from cat to cat. The more reliable measure is body condition. You should be able to feel the ribs under a light layer of fat without pressing hard, and the cat should show a visible waist when viewed from above.Recognising Obesity Early
Watch for a sagging abdominal pad that swings when walking, the loss of a defined waistline, and reluctance to jump or play. Even an extra 500 grams on a small frame meaningfully increases the risk of feline diabetes, arthritis, and hepatic lipidosis.Prevention and Management
* Measure every meal. Free-feeding is the leading cause of obesity in this breed. Use a high-protein, portion-controlled diet and weigh the food rather than eyeballing it. * Prioritise protein over carbohydrates. Lean muscle supports a healthy metabolism; grain fillers do not. * Make them move. Short daily play sessions with wand toys and puzzle feeders counteract the breed's natural tendency toward laziness. * Weigh monthly. Track weight on the same scale so you can catch gradual gain before it becomes a problem. A trim British Shorthair is a healthier, happier, and longer-lived companion. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian to set a target weight tailored to your individual cat.Dedicated to Health & Excellence
